What is an expedition kayak?
Velley gives a useful clarification about the term “expedition kayak” or “expedition style kayak”. This is not necessarily a kayak that will be used for multi-day expeditions, but a kayak that has this ability. The main difference is that if you load such a kayak with more luggage, it will not significantly change its behavior on the water. It will retain its stability, maneuverability and speed potential. However, be prepared if you go on a longer trip with a group to help someone with the luggage, because you will have free space.
Design
For 40 years, this kayak has undergone many changes, and many molds have been changed to improve it. Until the moment when the manufacturers have clearly realized that the kayak is about to “lose its soul”. Valley managed to buy back a kayak produced from the first mold. Imagine the surprise: this kayak performs much better on the water than Nordkapp’s latest upgrade. After scanning and making only the most necessary changes to the design, they produced a new mold, and that is the Nordkapp Førti – the kayak with a “restored soul”, closest to the original.
Who is this kayak suitable for?
Valley themselves say that Nordkapp competes with their Etain, which is more stable, has a better straight-line stroke, and is less affected by the weight of the payload. You certainly need to be a more experienced kayaker to choose Nordkapp.
What is the better kayak? No one can tell! The fact is that Nordkapp, unlike many other kayaks, continues to produce and sell well. Maybe because it is so beautiful, because it has history and soul, because there are true connoisseurs among kayakers with more experience.
